KRYS MARSHALL
Name
I’m Krys Marshall, an actor, writer, podcaster and dog-mom.
How has 2021 been for you and which projects are you working on at the moment?
2021 for me, has been busy beyond belief. I’m currently shooting Season 3 of the Apple TV+ series “For All Mankind”, while simultaneously producing our show’s companion podcast as well as doing press and promotion for our current season; It’s a lot! Our series centres around the men and women of NASA beginning in the 1960’s- the astronauts, the engineers, and their families - told through the prism of an alternate history looking at what might have happened if the Space Race between the Americans and Soviets had never ended.
For so long I’ve dreamt of having the opportunity to not just “have a gig” to survive, but to do a show that truly feels ground-breaking and important. Getting the chance to play a female character whose relevance in the story is not tangential to a man, or centred around her beauty or sex appeal, but instead playing a character whose total value in this world is because of her brilliant mind and acumen for science, is pretty incredible.
Which opportunity were you given in your career that will always be important to you. Is there anyone who acted as a mentor to you?
My manager Paul has gone from being my business associate, to my mentor, to my confidant, to now a dear friend. As a young actress I’d signed on with reps who ran the gambit of dishonesty; I had managers who stole my money and agents who wouldn’t return my calls. When Paul and I met, I was fresh off the heels of another draining agent/client relationship and had quietly vowed that if this one didn’t work, I’d thrown in the towel. But he saw something in me that I no longer saw in myself. He bolstered my confidence, championed my work, and slayed dragons all over Hollywood in my honour. I’m ever so grateful for him and wouldn’t be where I am today without him.
Do you have any special memories of travel to Asia and favourite Asian owned businesses?
I have SO MANY incredible memories of time spent in Asia. My last trip to Asia was in Late December 2019. My husband and I spent time in Hong Kong over Christmas, before heading to Cambodia to ring in the New Year. Unbeknownst to us, we were in the epicentre of the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak. The trip was life changing. We had drinks on glamorous rooftop bars 60 stories above Wan Chai district, we received blessings from Buddhist monks in the temples of Siem Reap, and we took tuktuk rides from posh night clubs to cramped dive bars in Phnom Penh. Each city, each country has its own pulse, its own throbbing heartbeat, and the streets are alive with street vendors, and burning incense and roasted ducks hanging in window displays. Every time I’m in Asia I discover a new place and a new aspect of myself.
Where are you hoping to travel to next?
Tokyo is high on the list. The food, the fashion, the formality and reverence to nature, culture and elder generations... there’s too many reasons to go and not a single reason not to.
What you are wearing and what made you choose this look from Huishan Zhang?
I didn’t choose this dress, IT chose ME. I’ve always loved playful fashion and something about this tartan print reminded me of my primary school uniform. The volume in the shoulders feels whimsical, while the length and tailoring feel formal, structured and austere. It’s a great juxtaposition of masculine and feminine, irreverent and deliberate, seductive and chaste. It’s all the things.
